An absolute gem of a place

Close to all the local seaside locations, including Southwold, Aldeburgh, Orford and Felixstowe. The gardens of Simper’s Drift were ideal to relax in and eat breakfast or dinner al fresco. Beautiful surroundings and the cottage, itself, is spacious for two and everything you need is there and if not, the Host, June, is always happy to help out and recommends where to go for days out, eating out and local places for fresh fruit and groceries. Everything in the cottage was perfect and I can highly recommend Simpers Drift for a great getaway to relax and enjoy it.

We had such a fabulous time here. Fantastic hosts, beautiful gardens, friendly dogs and a warm and welcoming vibe. It was like a home away from home – I arrived feeling frazzled from London life, and left feeling rejuvenated and full of energy.

A lovely converted old dairy, located perfectly for the Suffolk coast and villages.

The hosts were lovely and on hand to offer great advice to help us make the best of this beautiful part of England during autumn.

Things To Do

The village pub provides good food and a good welcome to dogs and humans and the property is within easy reach of numerous wedding venues, as well as the Suffolk coast.

Here are just a few ideas for things to do during your stay at Simpers Drift…

Walking and Cycling

From the doorstep you will find an extensive network of walks and cycle routes meandering through the pretty Suffolk villages, both country and coastal including the Suffolk Coastal long distance walk.

Maps and guides available.

Nature Reserves

RSPB Minsmere – world renowned wetland, Boyton and Snape Warren.

National Trust Orford Ness.

The nearby Woodland Trust Pound Farm is a wonderful mix of woodland, orchard, grassy race, wildflower meadow and ponds covering 250 acres and nearly all fenced – ideal for those with four-legged guests!

Suffolk Wildlife Trust has several smaller reserves.

Hamford Water National Nature Reserve for seal watching trips (from Harwich via the Felixstowe to Harwich harbour foot ferry).

Beaches

For miles of wonderful sandy beach you won’t beat Southwold (home of Adnams brewery) with its lighthouse, gaily painted beach huts and Walberswick (try not catching a crab).

From Dunwich to Felixstowe is basically one long beach, mostly shingle and sand with the gentile seaside town of Aldeburgh the closest beach to Simpers Drift.

Sutton Hoo

Just a 15 minute drive away is National Trust owned archaeological site Sutton Hoo, featured in the book ‘The Dig’ (filmed starring Ralph Feinnes, Carey Mulligan and Lily James). The exhibition includes replicas of the astounding Saxon treasures (originals in the British Museum) found at the site.

Port of Felixstowe

Within a 35 minute drive is Felixstowe with its beaches.

A passenger and bike Ferry leaves from Landguard Fort (English Heritage) to historical Harwich and Shotley, This is provided by award winning Harwich Harbour Ferry Services who also run fascinating seal watching trips all year round.

Outdoor Sports

For golfers there are good local golf courses at Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and Southwold.

There is beach fishing at Aldeburgh, Southwold and Thorpeness and fishing trips can be booked with local firms.

Riding stables near beach, forest and river.

Historical Towns and Villages

Framlingham is well worth a visit with historic architecture, market square and castle (English Heritage and subject of Ed Sheeran’s song Castle on the Hill) along with its excellent restaurants, pubs and shops.

Orford on the coast also has an English Heritage castle, Pinney’s fish smoke house and National Trust Orford Ness nature reserve.

Woodbridge is a larger, attractive market town on the river Deben with a wide range of shops, facilities, cinema, pubs and restaurants.

Culture

Snape Maltings is the home of the world renowned concert hall and of the Britten Pears Music Trust. The trust also owns Red House in Aldeburgh the home of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears which is open to visitors and gives a great insight to the life and music of Britten. The concert hall has regular performances across all musical genre including the Snape Proms season.

Several of the large estates have summer evening events of performance art.

There are cinemas at Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Leiston, Ipswich and Southwold which also has a summer theatre.

There are several good art galleries, some in quite unexpected places across the local area.

Food and Drink

You will find a wonderful variety of venues serving excellent local food from fine dining to fish and chips.

Local farm shops and markets selling a wide range of locally grown or prepared food and drink.

A warm welcome at every bar with several Suffolk breweries well represented.

Enjoy wine tasting at nearby Shawsgate Vineyard.
